Inspection observations are obtained by utilizing surface supplied divers (300-foot umbilicals) with video and two-way voice communications. The color digital video camera uses a low light fixed focused system incorporating 750 lines of resolution and is mounted on the diver’s helmet. Two (2) 500 w underwater lights are also attached to the divers helmet alongside the video camera. The lights are positioned and adjusted to compensate for the possible light absorbing effect of suspended particulate in the water. Refraction of light can cause the iris of the camera to close and reduce the field of view and quality of image. The camera lighting is tested and adjusted, if necessary, at each inspection location to assure the best imagery is obtained. This is critical in enabling proper condition assessment and comparison during re-inspections of suspect and damaged areas.

Glenn Underwater Services, Inc. typically records video observations on a Digital Hard Drive Recording Device (DHDRD) that will allow immediate recording and playback. GUS also provides onsite transfer to DVD for the client and owner. By utilizing the digital recording system, the potential for losing inspection video data due to damage or factory problems with discs are eliminated.

The (DHDRD) is a computer based high resolution digital video recorder. It will record images at a resolution of 720 lines at full speed 30 frames per second with zero latency. It incorporates a 1 GHz host processor board with Wavelet compression capability. This will allow all images to be downloaded and viewed on a computer for viewing or annotation and also for emailing of video clips. High quality still images can also be obtained from the video recordings. This enhanced detail will be very beneficial during analysis and evaluation of potential defects during post process and during future inspections.
